The Santhal, one of the schedule tribes of the Jharkhand state. They are found in the districts of Hazaribagh, Singhbhum, Santhal-Pragana, Giridih, Dhanbad, Ranchi and Bhagalpur, Purnea, Sharsha and Munger in Bihar. Their language is Santhali they also know Hindi and Bengali. They occupy first position among the tribes of Jharkhand. In 1850 A. D. with the advice of Fr. Gossnur the Christen Priest started to study about the custom, culture and religion of all tribes to aid the British Government. A British Bureaucrat also joined the mission. In between only one Indian author S. C. Roy, who was advocate by profession was also co-operated by them. The present book is a very critical comparative study and presents situation with rare data about the 32 types of tribes according to scheduled list of Jharkhand State. It is a useful book for scholars, N. G. Os, state and Union Government offices to solve the socio-economic problems of the country.
